However the default config setting for the IOL1WAY bit is to let you lock the registers once and not unlock them after that (without a reset) which can lead to all sorts of problems. The power on default is for the PPS registers to be unlocked which is generally what you want. Also, at this stage I strongly recommend that you do not play with the IO locking/unlocking at least until everything else is correctly sorted out.
